Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
