Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
