Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
