The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
