The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
