Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely paramount.
