Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
