The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of the club's disappointing championship campaign, admitting the reigning champions are in a mess and letting down manager Arne Slot while doubting whether every player is owning up for the team’s slump.

The Dutch defender could not contain his anger after the weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. The club's chair was in attendance to witness Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven league games, their eighth loss in 11 matches across all competitions, and a performance that fell apart against a opponent that started the day in the drop zone.

“Unacceptable” Start and Defensive Lapses

The captain labeled Liverpool’s opening after halftime as “not good enough” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as the Forest player gave Sean Dyche’s team the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the current campaign.

“We had a productive build-up to the match but in a fixture you are facing facts and the truth is we gave away a free-kick in the opening period and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” stated Van Dijk. “We are certainly letting him down, but we’ve let ourselves down as well. You look at yourself first and then you help each other, you help each other get out of this mess because at the moment it is a mess – that's the reality.

Captain’s Challenge: Take Responsibility

The skipper typically addresses the media after a game as part of his role as team leader. Saturday was different, however. His voice was much louder – audible enough that any player in the stadium corridors could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while urging the squad to react. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The key point for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” When questioned whether this is occurring, he replied: “It's unclear. But it's essential. That's crucial I expect the boys to do. It’s not easy during difficult times but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”

Squad Investment and Team Problems

The Merseyside club invested almost £450m to strengthen a title-winning squad in the summer but have gone backwards, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. The captain maintained that Liverpool’s issues extend past the recent additions. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “What I want is for everyone to take responsibility on the pitch. This is necessary in order to motivate one another, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you must join the press. It’s basic things but they're lacking enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

The Dutchman added: “In the current term we lack any consistency, we concede excessive scores, we are being out-fought and everyone is responsible for it and I hope everyone sees that. It's vital to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to assign blame but unity is essential. Past successes were collective and claimed the title and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a tough time you have to stick together and avoid blaming others.

“You have to be a man and face the toughness and go again, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been going through many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the midweek visit of PSV in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so how should I respond, dwell on the loss? No, I’m going to return and analyze how we can improve results and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
