The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
