Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
