Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks continue
Citizens have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war governance of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to finish in return for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"When the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported another two victims had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south, medics reported.
