Forest's Striker Fires Twice as The Reds Conclude European Group Stage with Win over Hungarian Opponents

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now scored eleven strikes in all competitions for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts the team in control.
  • Striker adds a third with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • James McAtee caps a great display with a penalty.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a convincing triumph against their Hungarian visitors at the City Ground.

The hosts had already secured a place in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a slim possibility of making the top eight, even though they required several results to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident performance will give Forest fans confidence that their side can navigate the home-and-away tie to reach the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the post with a header inside the opening stages for the visitors – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

They broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second four minutes later – the striker squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the defence and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

That goal ended the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the impressive McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a infringement by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another step, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in Europe this term with six of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

This double also means he has got a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the prospect of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on the striker's mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, producing two superb finishes and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee turning in his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host their London rivals on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
