Northern Canada has been gripped by a bitter and extended period of frigid weather, with thermometers lingering between -20C and -40C for an extended duration. This week, the Yukon community of Braeburn saw the mercury drop to -55.7C, representing its most frigid December day in half a century.

Enduring Chill in the Deep Minus Forties

Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured 16 consecutive nights below -40C, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C at the start of the week. Whitehorse also recorded 10 nights when temperatures dropped below -30C.

The deep freeze spread farther south through Christmas week. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.

December 26th was anticipated to usher in lows of at least -20C through a wide swath, encompassing cities from Edmonton to Quebec.

Forecast to Persist For Days to Come

This harsh winter weather is expected to continue through the start of January. Officials have warned that the Yukon could face electricity outages soon, as the system endures record-high pressure from historically high electricity consumption.

This extended freeze is the result of a stationary polar vortex over Canada for much of December, which funnels frigid northern air southward. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north slowly, permitting warmer Pacific winds to flow over America and reach into portions of southern Canada.

Stark Contrast Compared to Stateside Temperatures

In stark contrast, parts of the US experienced historically high temperatures for Christmas as the mercury climbed roughly 15 to 30 degrees above typical averages. Across wide regions, the atmosphere was more akin to late spring rather than the end of December.

A number of states broke historical records for December 25th warmth. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte also logged readings above 25 degrees Celsius.

Heat-Dome Effect Drives the Heat

Unseasonable heat is predicted to persist on December 26th and into the weekend, with abnormal warmth projected to move across the southeastern US in the coming days.

The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a powerful high-altitude ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. This pattern establishes a broad area of high pressure over a large portion of North America, trapping warm air near the surface. Sinking atmospheric air undergoes compression and additional heating, fostering the buildup of exceptional warmth.
