California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when questioned about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, using his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would increase the party's House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and suggested revoking the state's ability to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy stated, in the wake of a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused loss of life and casualties.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a CDL under federal law.
Duffy had earlier stated he was blocking $40 million from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand national statutes," his administration retorted in a recent comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A this month's study revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.
In previous months, Newsom commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
